Unhealthy Snacks

Image
Back in 2010 I did a post about unhealthy cereals here . They were cereals most people thought were good for you but really weren't. Now I want to share this new list I saw on Yahoo about snacks you think are healthy but some really aren't healthy for you. Snack #1: Rice cakes This once uber-popular "diet" snack has a mere 35 calories, but consists of high-glycemic, puffed-up white rice with a low nutritional profile. "They're mostly made of air," says Sharon Palmer, R.D., a dietician and author of "The Plant-Powered Diet: The Lifelong Eating Plan For Achieving Optimal Health, Beginning Today." "You're better off choosing a low-glycemic snack that keeps you feeling full longer." Verdict: Ditch it. "You want to get as many nutrients as you can with your calories," Palmer says. "You can enjoy a cup of fresh strawberries for those same 35 calories and you'll get more flavor and nutrients." Snack #...

Quotes

Bunch of quotes I came across: "That thing called "trust". No one really has it, in my opinion. I think all we have is faith that our fears won't come true. "I couldn't even remember being lonely before, certainly not in this way, until I had seen the edge of all the way you could be with another person, which brought up all the myriad ways that person could never be there for you" (courtesy of leggy) "Hell is not quite other people. Hell is the other people we let into our heads and reign over us" "Let everything happen to you. beauty and terror. just keep going. no feeling is final" - Rainer Maria Rilke "A friend is a gift you give yourself" - Robert Louis Stevenson Speaking of quotes, someone sent me a link today asking me if I knew that UK Daily Mail (online) quoted a tweet of mine, where I called Kelly Osbourne stupid for calling Quevenzhane, Little Q on the Oscars Red Carpet. (I was just really peeved abou...

Differences

If you have not heard of Lisa Lampanelli, she is an annoying comedian whose whole shtick is offensive racial humor that includes repeated use of the n-word. So, last week she posted this tweet: Notice her use of the n-word. Alright so after outrage on the interwebz, she offered this as an explanation: "   there’s a world of difference between the term “n—a” and “n—er.” The former “means ‘friend,’” she said, while the latter is a slur: “If I had put the word ending in ‘er,’ that would have been a very derogatory thing about Lena meaning she is less than me, and I view her as very above me. ‘A’ on the end means ‘my friend.’”  “I have been using these words since I started in comedy and guess what, people? I won’t stop anytime soon, just because your ass is up on Twitter,” she told HuffPo. “I have always used in my act every racial slur there is for Asians, blacks, gays, and Hispanics. To me, it’s acceptable if the joke is funny and if it is said in a context of no hate...

Happiness

In your own words, define happiness. Would you say you are happy?

Signs you're living beyond your means

Hi guys. Hope everyone is doing okay and those of you up north are staying warm with the snowy weather. You guys have gotten stingy with your comments on randoms :(. Yes, I'm pouting like a baby! I look forward to getting other pov's on some randoms and I get a big fat nothing. Wah! Hehe, anyways money is a major source of wahala for almost everybody. Thought I'd share this list (and some excerpts) I came across on Yahoo. 1.  You couldn’t survive financially without your job’s income for at least six months. In its 2012 annual financial literacy report, the  National Foundation for Credit Counseling  (NFCC) found that two out of every five adults (40%) said they were saving less than the prior year, and 39% didn’t have any nonretirement savings.  Generally, cash reserve need is based on how long you expect to be unemployed if you lose your job. Three months of expenses is reasonable, six months is ideal – particularly for self-employed people and those with v...

Friday Randoms

As much as I don't want to think it's true, I should probably accept that maybe God doesn't love us equally and some people are in fact more/highly favored than others. It really gets my goat when people call others a ho. I don't get it. Even if someone is some alleged ho, how is it affecting your life? What makes one a ho? Why is Kim Kardashian a ho? The new cool one is Taylor Swift. I usually come to her defense because the fact of the matter is we don't know these people's lives and it's just speculation. Yea, the babe dates a lot but since when does dating/talking to someone automatically mean you are sleeping with them? How do we even know she isn't getting dumped because she isn't putting out? I don't know, I am not saying these people are  innocent but the fact is we don't know. It's like people get some joy from calling them a ho. bleh. It could probably just be me, but job searching can kill your spirit something fierce. Wo...

We have a dotcom!

Those were the words uttered by my friend when I told her I had a pseudo site up and running now. Yes dear friends, just wanted to share with you that www.taynement.com is up and running now and I would appreciate it if you took a stroll and looked around. I've had this domain for a long time now but I have actually been scared to have it up and running. A dear friend of mine helped me with setting it up and getting my logo. I am grateful for her patience because I said "no" many times. It's still up and running and not a lot of content yet but I hope to sort the kinks out and get better with it. I am fully open to suggestions, comments and questions. I know I have quite a bit of work to do. I still don't have my breaking news segment running (which will be via a twitter feed) but I just wanted to take that leap before I chicken out. So once again, dear readers who have have been with me for God knows how long, hope you like it, share with your friends and than...

Diary of a New Iyawo

Monday: We are back from honeymoon and settled in our new home. It's fun to cook for Chuka. Today I made moin moin and the recipe said, 'Beat 12 eggs separately '. Well, I didn't have enough bowls to do that, so I had to borrow 12 bowls to beat the eggs in. The moin moin turned out fine though. Tuesday: We wanted a fruit salad for supper. The recipe said, 'Serve without dressing'. So I didn't dress. But Chuka happened to bring a friend home  for supper that night. They both looked so startled when I served them. I think it was the salad. Wednesday: I decided to serve rice and found a recipe, which said, 'Wash thoroughly before steaming the rice'. So I heated some water and took a bath before steaming the rice. Sounded kind of silly in the middle of the day. I can't say it improved the rice anyhow.  Thursday: Today Chuka asked  for salad again. I tried a new recipe. It said, prepare ingredients, and then toss on a bed of lettuce one hour before...

25 Movies To See Before Oscar Night

So you guys know it's my season..award season that is. I love award season. It's just the perfect bow to the whole year of everything popculture. It's exhilarating to see deserving people win, frustrating to see the snubs and fun to see your early predictions come true. Anyways, the Oscars are my least favorite award shows even though they are the most prestigious. I am just so over the old ass Academy now with their stuffiness/politics/sticking to old rules. They really need to branch out and see beyond the "usuals". All that being said, every year EW publishes the list of 25 movies to see before Oscar night and every year I try to watch most of it. I have never watched all 25 in all the many years I have been doing this, just because there are just some movies I will never watch, some movies are hard to find and by the time I have access I am like meh. So here we go: 1.  Frankenweenie 2.  Compliance 3.  The Perks of being a wallflower 4.  Middle of Nowhere ...
